White Rider is a depiction in song of a scene from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Narrated from the perspective of a hobbit named Peregrin (Pippen) Took watching from the walls of Minas Tirith as the Nazgul pursue Faramir, brother of Boromir, the sons of Denethor, the steward of Gondor, as Faramir and his men flee from the ruins of Osgiliath across the Pellenor fields.

Gandalf is The White Rider and Shadowfax is the horse upon which he rides. For some reason Peter Jackson made Shadowfax white! However, I wrote this song in high school many years before the LotR movies. I was going by Gandalf's description where he says "...By day his coat glistens like silver; and by night it is like a shade, and he passes unseen."

This scene, where Gandalf the White reveals immense hidden power, is among the most dramatic in the entire trilogy. It is a heroic moment which I imagine the local bards would memorialize in song something like this....

lyrics

I sit upon the walls of a mighty fortress
and watch the sunset far behind...
the mountains to the West.

Looking to the East I see a shadow
rising higher than it ever did.
It won’t let me rest.

Suddenly I see upon the air five chilling
figures of fear who swoop down upon
a group of men whose distance hides their face.

A chilling shriek fills the air
and I am left standing there in terror...
frozen to my place.

Who will go out to save this group
whose foes from the air swoop
brandishing...
flaming swords of fear?

And which of you is brave enough to
dare to venture beyond the walls of safety
and bring in our lord’s son so dear?

Oh white rider
on a horse of glistening black
ride to the attack...
In a flash of light disperse our foes.

Oh white rider
wand’ring through the night.
hidden is your might...
and no one knows just where you go.

The gates blow open wide before the
wrath of blinding light and
out bursts the wisest of the old.

Streaking across the open field
like a bolt of light’ning at last revealed
his heat…
shall smash the cold.

Oh white rider
on a horse of glistening black
ride to the attack...
In a flash of light disperse our foes.

Oh white rider
wand’ring through the night.
hidden is your might...
and no one knows just where you go.
